Koans for Palestine
Project type
Poetry w/ AI Images
Date
November 2023
Location
Cape Town, South Africa
Shortly after the events of October 7, 2023, I wrote a poem called Kōans for Palestine, using lines from the poem to generate AI images for each stanza.
Kōans are paradoxical questions, statements, or stories used in Zen Buddhist teaching to help students disrupt logical reasoning and connect with spontaneous, intuitive insight.
In a world where logic reigns supreme, we often forget the raw clarity of instinct. Reason and critical thinking certainly have a role to play in helping us determine what is right, but so do our hearts and intuition. You don’t have to be an expert to feel that the massacre of over 40,000 innocent men, women, and children in Gaza is deeply wrong. You don’t have to read all the history books to know that Palestinians, like all peoples, deserve to be free.
Trust your empathy. It is the essence of our humanity.
